Conclusion: Why Think in Terms of a Field?

The financial picture for dementia research and the costs of care and the perceived distance in 2016 between political and policymaking elites and individual citizens, particularly in areas suffering from decades of underinvestment and deprivation like that of the gym, represent important environmental conditions for new and existing projects in dementia care and at-risk youth support. The combination of constraints and opportunities affect not only the relationship between one organizations and services across an area of work and thus the analysis should, in principle, extend to examining patterns within the area regarding conceptualization of problems and needs, types of interventions, organizational characteristics, and impact indicators.

The next chapter develops a framework for analyzing how areas of social intervention, or fields of social action, become constituted and are reproduced, influencing the kinds of services and organizations that develop and survive and their effect on social change. The chapter also suggests how to alter fields by accounting for the connection between range of factors in service and organizational effectiveness, such as staff motivation; social relations between staff and service users, and the expression of trust; communication between the public and voluntary or nonprofit sectors; understanding of need and impact; funding sources; and social networks. Some of these factors do not appear in evaluation models that focus on tangible inputs into measurable results (like number of youth accompanied when interviewed or detained at the police station), but are significant in service delivery and instigating individual behavioral and attitudinal change.
